Obituary for Dorothy T. Pendergrass

Dorothy T. Pendergrass, 92, formerly of Greenfield, MO, passed away on November 8, 2017, at the Brookdale Alzheimers & Dementia Facility in Topeka, KS.

She was born in her grandparents’ home in Ludlow, MO, on July 15,1925, the daughter of Glen and Nettie DeVaul Toner. Later the family moved to Chillicothe, MO, where she grew up attending a rural one-room school, Chillicothe High School, and the Chillicothe School of Business.

During WWII she worked in the government’s Rationing Office in Kansas City. At the end of the war, she moved to Columbia, MO where she worked in the Ag offices at the university while attending classes. There she met Leslie S. Pendergrass, an Ag student attending MU on the GI Bill.

They were married in Harrison, AK on September 28, 1946, and they became the parents of Patricia Ann two years later. After Les’ graduation from MU, they lived in Bakersfield, MO and Lockwood, MO before settling in Greenfield on a small farm where they spent the next 60 years.

Dorothy returned to college after her daughter was in school, completing her B.S. in Education and her M.S. in Counseling from SMS She taught one year in Everton, MO and the rest of her years were spent teaching in Greenfield. One of the awards she appreciated most was the “Friend to Education”.

She was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and the American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary. She loved attending the special “widow” events provided by Washington Lodge #87. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and painting; and she enjoyed sharing them with her friends and family as gifts.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by her daughter Pat Baker and husband, Phil of Topeka; her granddaughter Cherie Durst and her children: Erich, Jason, and Connor of Topeka; her grandson Clinton Baker and wife Jennifer and their children: Carston and Courtney of Wichita, KS; her grandson Craig Baker and wife Kendra also of Topeka; her sister Lucille Long of Jefferson City, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Greenfield Funeral Chapel. Services will be held on Saturday, November 18, at 1:00 pm at the Full Gospel Church in Bakersfield with RA Pendergrass officiating. Dorothy will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Bakersfield Cemetery.
